Introducing your instructor,

Kimberley Lawrence BA, RDH,

 

is a dental hygiene professional with over 32 years of experience in the dental field, including 18 years in independent practice, mobile dental care, and education. She is a senior theory and clinical instructor at Southern Ontario Dental College, where she also developed the IPAC protocols and leads National Board Exam preparation. Kim is the founder of At Your Door Dental Hygiene Services, delivering mobile preventive care to long-term care residents and home-bound individuals. Her career spans roles in community health, corporate education (Acteon North America, PDT), and leadership, including her presidency of the Niagara Dental Hygienists’ Society. Kim recently joined the CDHA on the IDHPAC, representing independent hygienists in Ontario. A passionate advocate for access to care, Kim regularly presents on Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF), Interim Stabilization Therapy (IST), senior care, and best practices in independent dental hygiene. She is a respected voice within the broader dental hygiene community.

 

Learning Goals


1.

Understand the Clinical Application and Purpose of SDF and IST
Learners will be able to describe how Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) and Interim
Stabilization Therapy (IST) work, including their indications, contraindications, and
benefits for pediatric, geriatric, and underserved populations.

 

2.

Demonstrate Knowledge of CDHO Scope of Practice Related to Temporary
Restorations Learners will be able to identify what is permitted under the CDHO scope of practice regarding the placement of temporary restorative materials by dental hygienists, and explain the legal and ethical responsibilities (e.g., informing clients of the temporary
nature).

 

3.

Develop Proficiency in the Clinical Technique for SDF and IST Application
Learners will be able to demonstrate or simulate the step-by-step application of SDF and IST, including isolation, material handling, application, and post-procedure considerations using hands-on materials.

 

4.

Evaluate the Benefits and Limitations of Glass Ionomer Materials in IST
Learners will critically assess the advantages and limitations of using glass ionomer materials in temporary restorations, particularly in mobile and low-resource settings.

 

5.

Apply the ADPIE Process to IST Cases in Community Settings
Learners will be able to apply the ADPIE (Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning,
Implementation, Evaluation) process to real-world scenarios involving temporary
restorations in clients with barriers to dental care, such as those in LTC or remote
communities.
